A reticulate cultural phylogeny

The evolution of the American musical

Not just who worked with whom — the works themselves. Each show is coded for ~25 heritable traits across music, dance, dramaturgy, and politics, then placed by trait similarity. Solid lines are family lineages; dashed lines are horizontal transfer — a revival, adaptation, or downtown idea grafting across families (a tree would hide these). The cone on the right projects the rising and falling traits into the adjacent possible.

Culture is stochastic and produces black swans (e.g. Hamilton). Read the cone as a distribution of plausible forms, not a prediction.

likely

The Belt Cathedral

When every line is a key change.

This form pushes the rising 'pop_vocal_demand' (0.762) and 'through_sung' (0.381) traits to their logical extreme: the spoken book all but vanishes, replaced by wall-to-wall pop-vocal architecture. Drawing on the dominant 'pop-music' influence, scores are built around the contemporary belt riffing, vocal runs, and stadium dynamics audiences already stream daily. The 'contemporary_idiom' trait (flat but persistent) keeps the harmonic language squarely in current pop, so the theatre essentially becomes a sung-through concert with narrative scaffolding. Casting pivots to vocal athletes; orchestration mimics the producer's console. The danger and the thrill is the same: when nothing is spoken, story must ride entirely on melody.

plausible

The Framed Chronicle

A narrator opens the book of history.

Here the rising 'frame_device' trait (0.414) fuses with the twin exogenous pulls of 'history' and 'novel' to produce musicals obsessed with the act of telling. A present-day narrator, archivist, or descendant cracks open a past — letters, trials, revolutions — and the 'through_sung' impulse (0.381) carries the audience between the framing present and the historical interior. 'Politics' supplies the stakes: these shows interrogate who gets to write the record. The frame lets creators justify anachronistic 'contemporary_idiom' scoring (modern voices commenting on old worlds) while satisfying literary, biographical, and documentary appetites. Think adaptation-as-investigation, where the proscenium itself becomes a page being turned.

wildcard

The Algorithmic Encore

The setlist rewrites itself nightly.

The wildcard collides 'pop_vocal_demand' (0.762) and the 'film'/'pop-music' influences with generative performance technology. Because the form already trends toward pop-vocal showcase numbers and 'frame_device' scaffolding, a modular through-sung musical emerges whose framing conceit IS its variability: an AI-assisted 'live remix' reorders, reharmonizes, or regenerates numbers per performance based on audience input or trending data. 'Contemporary_idiom' becomes literally up-to-the-minute, pulling from the week's charts. The frame device — a host, an oracle, a streaming interface — naturalizes the mutability. It threatens authorship and reproducibility, but promises a Broadway that can never be fully bootlegged because no two nights share a score.
